If you’re a CM7 Nook Color junkie like me than you probably wonder which of the many stable/nightly or modified versions of CyanogenMod 7 you should be running. We’ll, I’ve tried plenty of them and my favorite right now is called “Phiremod”. Phiremod is a modified version of the most stable CM7 7.0.3 OS.
This is Android Gingerbread 2.3.3 if anyone cares. In addition to the stock CM7 features, which include working bluetooth (albeit limited range still), Phiremod includes the following additions:
- Customed theamed
- System animations
- Live Wallpapers
- Xoom system sounds/fonts
- Google Music App
- Disabled Camera and MMS (finally!)
- gTab simi Clock widget included
- Titanium Backup included (very important)
- GAPPS included
- Removed CM specific apps
- phiremod-walls.apk
- Modified host profile to remove most web adds
- gTab Notion Ink Email (pretty cool)
- gTab Canvas
- OC Kernel (I wrote about overclocking earlier)
If you want to check it out for yourself, I’d recommend heading over to this site and following the installation instructions. Please keep in mind that you are modifying the Nook Color on your own and you could potentially break it. If that happens, don’t hold me responsible! That being said, I’ve never had any issues bricking my Nook Color.

I use Phiremod on my NC. It works great. The stock software didn’t even have smooth scrolling and I really didn’t like the interface. Then I rooted by using Manual Nooter. It was a lot better but it still wasn’t very fast and I didn’t like the stock toolbar hanging around. With Phiremod the NC is awesome. It is so fast now. I use it mainly for Facebook, Twitter and reading comic book files CBZ and CBR. These formats aren’t supported on the stock NC.
Hi Brent,
Thanks for the comment! One question…Did you try the stock CM7 before Phiremod or just went straight to Phiremod? Both CM7 and Phiremod are lightyears ahead of stock. I simply prefer the add-ons that Phiremod gives me. I seem to change my mind every week however and find a new “best” OS. Right now I’m interested in trying out MeeGo on the Nook Color. Just waiting for better install instructions to come out.
Hi afroehlich,
I have used CM7 for more than a month and recently put phiremod MIUI v2 on it. Wow, what a difference. Both are way better than stock. Right now, phiremod ‘looks’ and ‘feels’ better than CM7. It could be the really nice customization. The one problem i noticed with phiremod is wierdly with Google Music beta. It has not been able to stream music via the App. It can only play the music on-device. Baseline, phiremod MIUI v2 is really nice.
Very cool Krishna…I’ve not tried MIUI v2 yet. I may have to try it in the next week or two!
Appreciate your information on the NC and Cyanogen Mod7. I am having issues with the bluetooth on a NC running CM7 build 7.1.0 RC1
I can get BT to turn on, but even when it says I’m connected to myBT headset (Jabra Halo), I never get more than a momentary crackling noise, then nothing. I’ve played with shutting off wireless and BT, rebooting and turning on BT first, but nothing seems to work at this point. Wondering if you’ve heard or seen anything similar – thanks
