Verizon seems to be one of the few US wireless carriers that “get’s it”. It was recently revealed that Verizon will specifically target their LTE wireless broadband network in 30 Cities that have NFL football stadiums. The goal is to have these 30 cities blanketed in 4G wireless by the end of the year.
This news is brilliant for two reasons. First is in the marketing, Verizon can (and likely will) use NFL games which have very large audiences both attending the games and also watching the games on TV. It gives Verizon a major outlet to reach millions of people.
Second, and more importantly, Verizon is focusing on customers that attend football games in these 30 cities. If anyone who has gone to a sporting event in the last few years knows, fans love to use smartphones for a variety of reasons while watching games. Anything from looking up stats, scores, videos or even to settle that friendly trivia bet you just made with your friend. Wireless broadband has become part of the live sporting event culture.
Finally, a carrier that understands its customer! Even though this might simply be a marketing strategy, somebody at Verizon understands that sports fans are also heavy wireless broadband users.
