Cisco and Jawbone Partner So You Never Have to Take Off Your Bluetooth Headset Again

Cisco jawboneCisco Systems and Jawbone will team up to create hands-free wireless headsets that can transparently move from mobile devices to Cisco IP phones. This is a very small but cool feature for those of us that have Cisco IP phones and like to use Bluetooth headsets for both our mobile and desk phones.

The new Jawbone headset is called ICON and comes in six bold designs. The technology works like this: You make or receive a call from your Cisco IP phone using your paired Jawbone headset. Once the call is completed, you receive a call on your mobile phone. The wireless headset can then transparently roam back to your mobile phone and the call can be connected.

Basically, the headset and Cisco phone will work together to control two communications channels, one between the headset and the Cisco IP phone and the other between the headset and your mobile phone. It used to be a real pain to have to manually switch between the two devices. Now it would seem that no user intervention will be necessary. This is especially useful for those of us that are constantly moving around the office.

Any Cisco IP phone with Bluetooth technology will be able to take advantage of this feature. This includes desk phones, wireless IP phones and even the upcoming Cisco Cius tablet.

This new technology will likely save me a ton of money because I will be able to have my Bluetooth headset in my ear 24 hours a day. If I ever take it off, I inevitably lose it and end up having to buy a new one. Now I never have to take it off and will know exactly where it is at all times. The Jawbone ICON is currently for sale in the United States and will be available internationally sometime in October.
